Birth Photography: The Process

Birth is one of the most incredible experiences a woman can go through in her life. The emotions are powerful - the joy, the pain, the anticipation, the relief. As a birth photographer in Leander, Texas, it's my honor to capture those sacred moments for families as they welcome new life into the world.

In this blog post, I'll walk through my typical birth photography experience from start to finish. As you'll see, ensuring a smooth process with clear communication is key to documenting this once-in-a-lifetime event beautifully.

The Initial Consultation

It all starts with an initial consultation, usually over video chat or phone. We'll discuss your due date window and any specific shots or moments you really want captured, like your partner announcing the gender or cutting the umbilical cord.

I'll explain how being on-call works and what to expect when active labor begins. We'll also go over your birth preferences - for example, if there are any cultural traditions you'd like me to photograph. This consultation lays the groundwork for a positive birth photography experience.

Dont be nervous, I’ve got you covered!

On-Call: Ready When You Are

Once we've had the initial consultation, I'll be on-call for your entire due date month. I take on a maximum of two birth clients per month to ensure I have the flexibility and availability you'll need.

I always have my bags packed and ready to go! When you start having contractions and it's time for me to head to the birth location, your partner or doula will give me a quick call or text. Staying in close communication is crucial.

The photographer needs to capture all the special moments, while being as unobtrusive as possible in the birth space. That's why I aim to arrive during active labor when things are moving along but before you're too far into pushing.

See why birth photography is worth it!

Capturing Those First Moments

Once baby arrives, those first sweet moments are so fleeting and emotional. As your birth photographer, I'll be there for that powerful moment of birth as well as those first newborn snuggles.

My goal is to let you fully experience that once-in-a-lifetime moment while also preserving it forever in beautiful, artistic images you'll cherish. I typically stay for around 45 minutes after baby's arrival, carefully documenting all those first milestones like:

  • Baby's first breath

  • Cutting the umbilical cord

  • Your first skin-to-skin contact

  • Those first few attempts at nursing

Of course, every birth is unique and I'm flexible based on your preferences and how everything is unfolding.

Don’t have any regrets!

The Gallery Delivery

Within a few weeks after your baby's birth day, you'll receive an online gallery containing all your stunning birth images. I carefully edit each one to bring out the natural beauty and wonder of those first moments with your newborn.Birth artwork makes such a lovely addition to any nursery or family room.

Reliving The Experience Through Imagery

I always tell my clients that giving birth is one of the most empowering experiences a woman can have. Yes, it's messy, primal, painful, and chaotic at times. But you are quite literally bringing new life into this world. You are a warrior!

Looking back at beautiful birth imagery can help you reconnect with the power you tapped into that day. It evokes the emotions of finally meeting your little one after carrying them for so long. And it reminds you of the strength, determination, and tenacity you embodied throughout your birth journey.

Whether you want to smile, cry, or simply remember how incredible you are as a life-giver, birth photography ensures you'll always be able to revisit and relive those first moments as a new parent. It's truly an honor to help preserve such a transformative event.

If you're an expecting mama in the greater Leander or North Austin area, I'd love to be there to capture your baby's birth day. Reaching out for a consultation is the first step!
